Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is an effective, non surgical treatment option available for musculoskeletal conditions relating to tendons, particularly calcific tendinopathy. It involves repeated shockwaves (sound impulses) being delivered to the area to stimulate natural tissue repair mechanisms.
A session typically involves the following steps:
- The target area is located through palpation (a physical examination using the hands) to ensure the delivery is precise
- Ultrasound gel is applied to ensure the shockwaves are transmitted efficiently
- The hand-held probe is placed on the treatment area and moved over the skin of the affected site with slight pressure
- It is quite a unique device, so it may feel odd and uncomfortable to start, but as the treatment continues, your discomfort should reduce. Each treatment will last for approximately 10-20 minutes.
- The number of treatments required will depend on the severity of the condition, and pain levels, but in most circumstances would require 3-5 sessions of therapy at weekly intervals.
Generally, shockwave can be beneficial for any of the following conditions:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Shin splints
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Other tendinopathies
- Iliotibial band syndrome
- Some chronic long standing bursitis
- Trigger point therapy
