Diabetic Foot Care

For people living with diabetes, feet are often overlooked as the management of other aspects of diabetes takes higher priority. However, foot problems are extremely common and often debilitating for people with diabetes. About half of people diagnosed with diabetes have some form of nerve damage, or neuropathy. This condition, which can present as pain, tingling, weakness or reduced sensation in the feet can lead to abnormal walking patterns, causing increased pressure in certain areas of the foot which can lead to ulcers forming.

In addition, due to the lack of sensation, a person with diabetes is less likely to notice an injury to the foot, and may not seek treatment until it has progressed to a more serious stage.

The good news is that there are several preventative steps you can take yourself to help reduce the chances of developing diabetic foot disease. By following a daily foot care routine at home and having regular foot monitoring with your health professional, most foot problems are avoidable.
