Do I need soft orthotics or hard orthotics?

soft or hard orthotics

If you are reading this I bet you thought that there two types of foot orthotics, and you are wondering if you have the right ones.

Some people ask specifically for soft orthotics because they have been told that hard orthotics are uncomfortable, or they have had a bad experience in the past with orthotics that didn’t help.

Firstly it is important to understand that orthotics we provide are only part of the treatment plan. Depending on your problem or condition, we will partner with you to establish your goals, and develop a treatment plan that progresses you towards those goals. The treatment plan may include any or all of the following:

  • type of footwear you use
  • the amount of activity you do
  • the type of activity you do
  • how much rest you need
  • a program of stretching or strengthening
  • bracing or orthotics
  • physical therapies
  • shockwave therapy
  • dry needling

If orthotics are required they will be suitable to your condition and activity level. We do not specify that they are hard orthotics or soft orthotics, and they may in fact be a combination of hard and soft materials.

The factors we consider when providing orthotics are the amount of support or correction required, the structures that we are focussing on, and the type of cushioning or protection that will be most comfortable.

If your orthotics are not comfortable we will work with you to make sure you can wear them, and will even have them re-made if necessary. That’s because every part of your treatment plan is important, and we and you to reach your goals.
