Caring for your orthotics

Custom orthotics are a fantastic investment in your foot health. They provide support, improve alignment, and can help reduce pain caused by a range of conditions. Like any device you use daily, orthotics will last longer and work better when cared for properly. Here’s a simple guide on how to get the most out of your new orthotics.

Wearing in Your Orthotics

It’s normal for your feet and body to need time to adjust to custom orthotics. To make the transition smooth and comfortable:

  • Day 1–3: Wear them for 1–2 hours at a time, then switch back to your regular shoes.

  • Day 4–7: Increase wear to 3–4 hours a day.

  • Week 2: Aim for 4–6 hours daily.

  • Week 3 onwards: You should be able to wear them full-time.

Tip: Mild aches or muscle fatigue are normal in the first few weeks as your body adapts. If you experience sharp pain, stop wearing them and check in with your podiatrist.

Keeping Your Orthotics Clean & Fresh

Since orthotics sit inside your shoes for many hours a day, they can collect sweat and odour if not cared for properly.

  • Wipe them down: Use a damp cloth with mild soap and water—never soak them.

  • Dry naturally: Let them air dry away from direct heat (no heaters, dryers, or sunlight, as this can warp the material).

  • Freshen up: Sprinkle a little bicarb soda in your shoes overnight to reduce odour.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Don’t use bleach, alcohol wipes, or machine washing, as these can damage the materials.
  • Check for debris: It is a good idea to remove your orthotics from your shoes on a regular basis and empty out any debris. Small pebbles, for example, can dig into the orthotic and destroy it’s wedging and support.

  • Moving between shoes: If you swap your orthotics between different shoes, take care when removing and inserting them. Avoid forcing them into shoes that are too small, as this can damage both the orthotic and the shoe. We can also manufacture your same orthotic prescription to fit a variety of footwear. If you’d like to explore getting an additional pair of orthotics for other shoes, please speak with your podiatrist. In many cases, a second pair can be provided at a reduced cost.
  • Squeaking orthotics? Sometimes orthotics can develop a squeaking sound while you walk. This is usually caused by the edge of the plastic shell rubbing against a hard surface inside the shoe. If this happens, try sprinkling a small amount of talcum powder under the orthotic or lightly rubbing a bit of soap along the edges. Please mention any squeaking at your next podiatry review so we can provide a long-term solution.

Protecting Your Orthotics

A few simple habits can keep your devices in top condition:

  • Always wear socks with your shoes to reduce sweat build-up.

  • Avoid wearing orthotics in old or worn-out shoes that don’t provide enough support.

  • Check them regularly for signs of wear (cracks, worn top covers, or loss of support).

Lifespan of custom orhotics

On average, custom orthotics last 2–4 years, depending on your activity level, foot structure, and the type of device. Children may need more frequent replacements as their feet grow.

Your orthotics have been prescribed specifically for your condition. The corrections built into the device are carefully designed to offload and support the affected tissues. If you develop new symptoms or sustain another injury, your orthotics may need to be adjusted or modified. In cases where foot function or pathology has changed significantly, your podiatrist may recommend a new set of devices.

To ensure they’re still doing their job:

  • Book a review appointment every 12 months.

  • Replace top covers or padding if they become worn before the device itself needs replacing.

  • If you notice a return of your symptoms, don’t ignore it—your orthotics may need adjustment.

Your custom orthotics are a key part of your foot health plan. With proper care—wearing them in gradually, keeping them clean, and checking in regularly with your podiatrist—you’ll help them last longer and continue to feel the benefits every day.
