The degree of injury will depend on the forces applied, and the direction of those forces.
Ankle sprains are graded 1 – 3 based on severity. There may also be a high ankle sprain affecting ligaments in the lower leg.
Protection – avoid exercise, heat, alcohol and massage in the first 48 hours
Rest – limit your activity to prevent further injury
Ice – for 10 minutes every 2 hours
Compression – bandage up the calf and down to the toes to reduce swelling
Elevation – above the hip to reduce swelling
Seek medical attention if you are unable to walk more than 4 steps, or if your ankle injury is not improving after 48 hours.
